The AFO market is trending to Carbon Composite AFOs. A 2016 study of 123 patients with mixed neuromuscular diagnoses conducted by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Department of Neurology concluded, “Anterior shell carbon fiber AFOs should be considered for most neuromuscular patients with distal leg weakness.” A carbon composite AFO, however, is only as good as its fit. In this 4-hour course, you will become expert on assessing patients to determine the best style of carbon composite AFO offering the dynamics and propulsion needed for a patient’s specific challenges and how to properly align and customize that AFO to ensure optimal function and longevity. Prosthetists have come to adopt liners with pins and locking devices as their mainstay suspension method for transtibial amputees. While this provided them with major improvements over previous suspension methods available, not all amputees have the proper tissue and limb configuration to be fitted with locking suspension. The stresses created at the distal end will cause skin and suspension problems in a good number of amputees. Additionally, the largest segment of the amputee population, more specifically geriatric and less functional individuals, often have difficulty donning a pin.

The mechanical characteristics of orthoses should be tuned to the patients’ specific needs. Research demonstrates that optimizing AFO stiffness and alignment can impact the functional outcome in the treatment of some neuromuscular conditions, including stroke. This program provides a detailed overview of a novel orthotic component, The Becker Triple Action™ Stance/Swing Control Ankle Joint. The Triple Action helps simplify orthotic tuning and improve clinical outcomes for patients with complex pathologic neuromuscular conditions. Successful application of a stance control orthosis is tied to a proper patient assessment. Chronic and acute patient categories present unique challenges in the use of the technology. Success has been directly linked to a physical trial with an immediate fit orthosis. In chronic cases, a practitioner can ascertain if any physical restraints exist from the late effects of a neuromuscular deficit. In acute cases, the practitioner can initiate gait retraining and determine if sufficient muscular strength exists for the patient to initiate over-the-ground weight bearing. Anatomy of the Foot and Ankle

We will discuss treatment options to unweight diabetic foot ulcers and a new approach to treating Charcot disease with use of a newly designed CROW boot called shark-o. SpineCor® “Tech-Assist” Model Training for Adult SpineCor Comfort Plus Brace Treatment

In this four-hour workshop, attendees will learn how to order and fit adult SpineCor Comfort Plus braces to their scoliosis or hyperkyphosis patients. We’ll teach orthotists how to take patient evaluation photos for the Tech-Assist team and explain to the Tech-Assist team how they decided between the different brace configurations. The brace ordering process will be presented, as well as the various brace configurations. Each attendee will have an opportunity to gain some hands-on experience with a live patient model. Guidance on indications and contraindications will also be provided to help the orthotist determine patient candidacy. The long-term management of a patient in the adult SpineCor Comfort Plus brace will also be presented.
