This course provides an in-depth study of traumatic spine fractures including fracture classification and cervical and thoracolumbar spine anatomy overview. Also, comprehensive spinal injury evaluation and treatment; initial patient evaluation, patient stabilization, pathophysiolgy of the more common diagnoses and orthotic intervention will be discussed.

For many decades, rehabilitation experts have been searching for an orthosis that will safely support a weakened or paralyzed leg without locking the knee and interfering with swing phase function. Horton's Stance - Control Knee™ Joint [SCOKJ®] automatically engages and disengages a lock against flexion, offering the patient both stance phase security and swing phase toe clearance. Preliminary gait studies have demonstrated a substantial reduction in the energy cost of ambulation compared to a locked-knee gait. This special two-part workshop will be taught by John W. Michael, MEd, CPO, FAAOP, FISPO and will include a detailed review of the sagittal plane mechanics of normal and pathologic gait. Practical instruction on selection, fabrication, adjustment, fitting, and troubleshooting the SCOKJ® will be presented in a multimedia format. Please note that the morning session runs from 8:30am-12:30pm; the afternoon session is from 1:30-5:30pm. ABC Certified orthotists and prosthetists, BOC Certified orthotists and prosthetists, State Licensed orthotists and prosthetists, and residents going through the NCOPE program who successfully complete both the morning and afternoon sessions and the written examination that follows will be qualified to purchase the SCOKJ. Technicians and other interested individuals are also welcome to attend but will not become qualified.

This course will be divided into 4 fast paced, power-packed segments: (1) An eye-opening look at foundation principles for orthotic and prosthetic intervention. (2) Custom fabrication procedure for lightweight KAFO—lab session. (3) Whole new look at orthotic/prosthetic management of partial foot. (4) Custom fabrication of a TLSO in less than 1/2 hour—lab session.

This program begins by illustrating the indications and pathologies for use of this unique orthosis. Clark, MD (Neurosurgeon) have studied over a hundred cases combined, and they will share their expertise and results on these amazing findings. Finally, Bill will instruct a hands-on, step-by-step fitting of the Non-Invasive Halo, including modification techniques to accommodate bariatric patients and follow-up care.

This course is designed for clinicians who have experience in ordering and fitting Cascade DAFOs, and who would like practical, in-depth information on successful DAFO bracing for their most challenging pediatric patients. The presentation focuses on Cascade's methods of enhancing DAFO wear for patients who exhibit extreme presentations such as severe pronation and supination, hyperextension, crouching, strong plantarflexion, or unstable or uncorrectable foot positions. Methods highlighted include casting techniques, brace features, design modifications, and materials used to provide a DAFO whose fit and function encourage patient compliance. Class interaction is encouraged and practitioners are welcome to bring questions.

Research has demonstrated the C-Leg® and Compact™ are beneficial for a wide-range of patients. With over 30,000 users worldwide these microprocessor-controlled knees have been used successfully on people with limb deficiencies at the hemi-pelvectomy, hip disarticulation, bilateral trans-femoral, bilateral trans-femoral and trans-tibial combination as well as the unilateral trans-femoral level becoming the "standard of care" for individuals with trans-femoral amputations. This 4-hour course is designed to help you understand the C-Leg settings using the latest version of C-Soft and establishing integrated alignment using the L.A.S.A.R. posture. These tools will be demonstrated along with case studies and research examples to allow participants to optimize their fitting outcomes.

Application of functional electrical stimulation for foot drop requires an understanding of the physiological and biomechanical impact of the adjustments of settings. This workshop will review the concepts and application of the NESS L300™ Foot Drop System with particular focus on "tuning" various parameters and settings to address a variety of challenging clinical presentations and responses. Topics will include gait, fatigue, stance control, symmetry, tolerance, and nerve recruitment.

This two part workshop will cover advanced practice in the use of the original SpineCor® Dynamic Corrective Brace (DCB), and also introduce attendees to the new SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace. The SpineCor® Dynamic Corrective Brace is a flexible brace that is principally prescribed for Idiopathic Scoliosis patients. This presentation will outline the major factors that are involved in progressive spinal deformities and will provide an overview of SpineCor® treatment principles, dynamic bracing concepts and patient selection criteria, clinical application and published outcomes. The SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace is a new and innovative approach to spinal orthotic management in the adult population. It is being successfully used in the orthotic management of various spinal conditions and can effectively reduce pain caused by abnormal spinal loading and abnormal posture. This workshop is for both previously trained WalkAide Clinicians and for clinicians who want to expand neuroprosthetic technology into their O&P practice. This workshop will present the latest designs for the foot and ankle which emphasize the dynamic nature of resistance rather than locking out different motions. Attendees will gain an understanding of the basic differences in prosthetic feet when compared to physiologic function. The various prosthetic classification subsets will be covered. As foot designs incorporate new technology other terminology becomes necessary to differentiate the different classes of feet. New terminology will be presented that individually represents the component parts of current foot design. New ankle componentry will be presented. The function allows rotation, provides shock absorption and adjusts for slopes. Additional information will be presented with respect to the function of stance flexion in walking as well as unique case studies.

The Dynamic Response Ankle Foot Orthosis (DRAFO) is a completely new approach to orthotic intervention in treating children with varying neuromuscular and orthopedic pathologies. This entire system (evaluation, cast, fitting and tuning of device) allows the practitioner the ability to achieve better long term outcomes utilizing appropriate biomechanical alignment to induce the most effective functional gait in their patients from casting to fit. O&P professionals are increasingly being consulted on diabetic foot care. Learn about the biomechanics of the diabetic/neuropathic foot, footwear, pedorthic/orthotic interventions, and friction science. The presentation will focus on using ShearBan® to prevent and treat foot problems such as calluses and ulcers and will give participants opportunities to install ShearBan® using a variety of techniques.

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Orthopedic and O&P Industry Business Trends —This session will provide information about market trends and significant factors that are shaping the fabrication, distribution, fitting and billing of orthopedic products. This presentation will cover how the business strategies of various manufacturers and physician clinics have impacted O&P providers. There will be suggestions for how O&P practitioners can use marketing and communication strategies to increase physician referrals, and how to expand their business model to improve patient satisfaction.
2:30 to 5:30 p.m. - Functional, OA and Specialty Knee Bracing — This session will cover Townsend's bracing technology, fabrication processes, casting and measurement procedures, and ways customers can achieve positive patient outcomes as timely and cost-efficiently as possible. Townsend will compare and contrast our technology and fabrication to the knee bracing products offered by other leading orthopedic manufacturers. We will focus on innovations, new product releases and opportunities to reduce costs.

Prosthetists will learn the who, what, when, where and why of vacuum donning. The development of modular vacuum donning components allows more amputees the ability to don transfemoral suction suspension prostheses. In this workshop practitioners will gain first hand experience of all three vacuum donning systems with live amputee demonstration. Guidelines for use and maintenance of these systems will be presented.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use the BioBrim™ System to obtain the best fitting Transfemoral test socket-by-measurement that utilizes your hand skills. All aspects of the BioSculptor system will be reviewed with emphasis on hands on learning.

It is estimated that 30% of children with Cerebral Palsy that are ambulatory at age 6, will not be ambulatory at age 21. Why? Could a change in the orthotic environment early on — as early as 9 months - alter this long term result? Because the foot/ankle complex is now seen more from a perspective of dynamic tri-planar function during gait rather than of static postural immobilization, a more dynamic hybrid orthotic environment has been created to address the postural, developmental and functional needs of the involved child. "Controlled Motion" is a new approach to orthotic management of pediatric gait. In this workshop, we will review scientific foundation principles and orthotic environments geared toward creating development of more functional heel-to-toe gait.
