How to Conduct Single Subject Research and Present a Case Study
Jean Deitz, PhD, OTR, FAOTA
Daniel Abrahamson, CPO, LPO

Are you interested in systematically answering clinical questions, but don't know where to start? Do you want to help build the evidence to support practice? Are you concerned about developing the evidence to justify reimbursement for your services? Join us for a workshop focusing on designing and conducting single subject research. It will involve both a PowerPoint presentation and experience designing a practical, clinical study.

Practical Outcome Measures of Daily Patient Care
John W. Michael, CPO, FAAOP, FISPO

The standard for care in prosthetics and orthotics has been moving toward Evidence Based Practice in recent decades. The pace of this evolution is expected to accelerate now that many third parties have already implemented Evidence Based Payment requirements that restrict access to technologically advanced care. This 90-minute session will provide the busy practitioner with a concise overview of the current state-of-the-art in scientific outcome measures, emphasizing the importance in clinical applications of five interrelated types of measurement:

  1. Health Care Economic Impact
  2. Rehabilitation Guidance Tools
  3. Activity Limitation/Performance Measures
  4. Pain and Comfort Scales
  5. Quality of Life Instruments

This session will conclude with concrete suggestions for specific low cost and no cost outcomes measures suitable for today's clinical environment that have been validated for P&O patient populations.

Saturday, March 1

Instructional Course
Evidence Reports: Findings from the State-of-the-Science Conference on Biomechanics of Ambulation after Partial Foot Amputation
Stefania Fatone, PhD, BPO (Hons)
Brian Hafner, PhD

  • Biomechanics of Ambulation after Partial Foot Amputation: Systematic Review
  • Evidence Report Guidelines: A Template for Systematic Literature Reviews in O&P

The Academy, with funding from the Department of Education, has developed a program for facilitating State of the Science Conferences (SSCs) on topics related to the provision of orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) care. These conferences are developed around an “Evidence Report,” a systematic review of the literature on the conference topic. This session will discuss how an Evidence Report is created and how the best available evidence is collected, summarized and interpreted by the Evidence Report authors.
