Instructional Courses Reinforce Basics

An in-depth learning experience based upon accepted principles and practices.

The 2006 Academy Annual Meeting will feature three instructional courses.

Thursday, March 2

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

One of the goals of the Academy's Project Quantum Leap initiative is to document clinical standards of practice by conducting State-of-the-Science conferences (SSCs). An SSC was held in 2005 on the Lower-Limb Prosthetic Outcome Measures with funding provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This report reveals the discussions and recommendations for future study and care. You'll also learn more about the SSC that will be part of Grant Year III programming.

Saturday, March 4

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Instructional Course: 2
The Role of Orthotic Intervention in the Management of Craniosynostosis
Presented by the Academy Craniofacial Society

Review a detailed description of the characteristics, both pathologic and phenotypic of the differing forms of craniosynostosis, and the differential diagnosis of deformational plagiocephaly. Cranial anatomy and sutural growth will be reviewed and discussed, along with the behavior of each suture under synostotic conditions. Surgical intervention will be discussed to give attendees a scope of the severity of this condition if unmanaged, as well as the progression of patients through the surgical stage and a review of post-operative care and outcomes. Orthotic intervention will be discussed, including design considerations, management protocols, precautions, and FDA considerations.
